A big rig hauling packages for the U.S. Postal Service overturned on Interstate 680 in Danville on Monday morning, killing the driver and dumping its load across the freeway.
The driver, who was not identified, crashed around 3:25 a.m. in southbound lanes of the interstate near the El Pintado Road off-ramp, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Emergency crews pulled the driver from the mangled truck before paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where he later died.
Crews worked to clean up a pile of holiday packages strewn on the highway and roadside. Two freeway lanes were closed and the CHP issued a Sig-alert as traffic backed up as the morning commute got under way.
Monday is the busiest mailing and shipping day of the year for holiday packages, according to the U.S Postal Service. The postal service estimates it will deliver around 750 million packages this holiday season.
